LIBRARY AT NORTH RIDGE

Welcome to the library! We have a lot of fun activities planned this year. Below is a snapshot of what’s to come.  
 
Kindergarten students will enjoy many opportunities to explore and enjoy literature.  The goal for our library kindergarten program is to ensure that students:

  • Love books and reading.
  • Learn how to explore the library and choose books.
  • Learn how to care for library materials and share with others.
  • Develop awareness of the parts of a book.
  • Become familiar with a variety of authors and illustrators.
  • Discover and participate in various ways to enjoy stories; including books, digital media, felt boards and more.
  • Discover their creativity by exploring makerspaces.
  • Develop awareness of what it means to be a lifelong learner.

 
First graders will have the opportunity to strengthen their reading and listening skills.  The goal of our first-grade library program is to ensure that students:

  • Love books and reading.
  • Develop awareness of different types of book genres.
  • Develop awareness of the parts of a book.
  • Learn how to explore the library and locate materials.
  • Learn the difference between fiction and nonfiction.
  • Become familiar with a variety of authors and illustrators.
  • Discover and participate in various ways to enjoy stories; including books, digital media, puppets and more.
  • Engage in makerspace activities.
  • Learn to become independent readers.

 
Second graders will sharpen their reading and critical thinking skills.  The goal of our second-grade library curriculum is to ensure that students:

  • Continue to love books and reading.
  • Understand how to locate materials in the library.
  • Sharpen their awareness of various genres.
  • Participate in story time discussions.
  • Explore nonfiction text features.
  • Engage in makerspace activities.
  • Begin to formulate, record and share opinions.
  • Understand the basic steps of the research process.
  • Connect research to green screen technology


Everyone is invited to participate in our Birthday Book donation program where parents can donate a book to the library in recognition of their child's birthday.

 

OPALS

We are excited to announce that we have a new library system. Introducing OPALS, OPen-source Automated Library System! OPALS is a 24/7 information source for students and teachers to use and access wherever they are. Some of the key features include:
-Single sign-on for all databases
-On-campus Google searches
-Specific searches (title, topic, author…)
